Language Researcher and Instructor

Job Overview: 

The purpose of the Language Researcher and Instructor position is to learn and research the xa'isla language and orthography as well as to create teaching materials to help preserve the language and assist others in their language learning journey.

Duties:

The Language Researcher and Instructor provides expertise in studying the xa'isla language. In the execution of their role, they perform a number of different tasks and support the Culture & Language Program by performing tasks in a few key areas:

  1. Understand and complete language translations, interpretations, analyses, and research accordingly;
  2. Completing accurate transcriptions of audio recordings and tabulating data;
  3. Analyzing documents and texts and translating complex information into simple language;
  4. Collaborating with fluent speakers and other linguists and discovering and documenting the origins of words and the authenticity of texts;
  5. Updating and maintaining the xa'aisla dictionary {physical and digital);
  6. Regularly update xa'isla resources and documents;
  7. Develop language teaching tools and materials;
  8. Assist with developing xa'isla language curriculum and lesson plans;
  9. When requested or required, host Haisla language lessons and classes;
  10. Develop and implement polices and procedures for the care and handling of language and cultural archival materials;
  11. Assist with archiving and maintaining xa'isla archives and documents that pertain to language and culture;
  12. Provide translation of English to xa'isla for both outside agencies and in-house requests.

Qualifications:

  • Secondary School Certificate, or equivalent is required;
  • A Post-Secondary Bachelor's Degree is an asset;
  • A combination of relevant education and/or experience may also be deemed acceptable.
  • Experience with archiving and recording equipment is an asset.
