Position Title:    LABOURER

Reports to:         Public Works Supervisor

               

Job Overview

Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor, the Labourer assists with various duties within the Haisla Nation Council’s Public Works & Infrastructure department, including landscaping, wood chopping, general maintenance, and infrastructure support, while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment and adhering to workplace safety policies and regulations.

We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate wood chopping equipment (axe, etc.) under the guidance of supervisors.
  • Assist in the cutting, splitting, and stacking of wood products.
  • Load and unload wood materials from trucks and conveyor belts.
  • Sweep streets and parking lots.
  • Repair potholes in roads and streets.
  • Plant and maintain trees.
  • Clean and maintain all Haisla Nation Council’s facilities.
  • Assist in installing and replacing road and street signs.
  • Maintain records related to infrastructure (roads, drainage, signage, lighting, etc.).
  • Perform routine maintenance on city facilities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to supervisors immediately.
  • Work collaboratively and attend meetings with team members to maintain the overall efficiency of the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator certification.
  • First Aid, Level 1 preferred.
  • Previous experience in a labor-intensive role preferred but not required.
  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
  • Understanding of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks, including ability to lift heavy objects, and bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to utilize safe work practices.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.             
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
