Position Title:    EQUIPMENT OPERATOR - Interim Full-time 

Reports to:         Public Works Supervisor

Job Overview

Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor, the Equipment Operator assists with various duties within the Haisla Nation Council’s Public Works & Infrastructure department by operating heavy equipment, including landscaping, wood chopping, general maintenance, and infrastructure support, while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment and adhering to workplace safety policies and regulations.

We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate wood chainsaws, log splitters, and woodchippers under the guidance of supervisors.
• Sweep streets and parking lots using a street sweeper.

• Clear leaves and debris from lawns, parks and pathways.
• Mow lawns in public areas.
• Plow and sand roadways during winter.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks like cleaning, lubricating, and repairing equipment.
• Operate department equipment to assist in the maintenance of roads, drainage systems, buildings, and other public infrastructure.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring safety and efficiency.
• Follow all safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to Public Works Supervisor immediately.
• Work collaboratively and attend meetings with team members to maintain the overall efficiency of the department.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Public Works Supervisor.

Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Heavy Equipment Operator certification.
• Chainsaw Safety Training Certificate.
• First Aid, Level 1 preferred.
• Previous experience in a labor-intensive role preferred but not required.
• Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
• Understanding of safety protocols and procedures.
• Physical ability to perform tasks, including ability to lift heavy objects, and bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to utilize safe work practices.
• Ability to work well as part of a team.             
• Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
• Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.
• Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
