Position Title: COOK (Elders Centre and Culture & Language)
Reports to: Manager, Elders Services
Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Elders Services and Culture & Language, the Cook is responsible for the safe, efficient and organized operation of the Haisla Nation Elders Services and Culture & Language kitchen. This includes preparing ingredients, adhering to the menu, cooking meals, cleaning the kitchen environment, and following food health and safety procedures. The Cook ensures that menu items are of high quality and distributed in a timely fashion.

We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborate and plan menus with Elders Centre and Culture & Language staff.
- Collaborate and plan menus and activities for the Culture & Language Active Measures program.
- Carry out food purchase and preparation of meals within the allotted budget and timeline.
- Prepare ingredients for the day, including washing, chopping and seasoning meat, vegetables, etc.
- Prepare and cook menu items according to nutritional standards with other kitchen staff.
- Plan and/or prepare meals and snacks in advance for the following day while adhering to Food Safe standards and requirements.
- Store and dispose of any food properly.
- Ensure sufficient stock and inventory of food, supplies and equipment.
- Participate in the cleaning of the kitchen environment (e.g., dishes, laundry, cleaning, sweeping and mopping).
- Comply with health and safety and sanitation standards.
- Ensure that food is distributed in high quality and in a timely fashion.
- Maintain cooking equipment and report on defective equipment
- Perform basic first aid duties as required.
- Attend regular monthly staff meetings and Kitchen meetings.
- Other duties as required.
Skills & Qualifications
- High-school diploma or equivalent.
- Food Safe Level 1 certificate.
- First Aid, Level 1.
- 1 to 3 years of related experience cooking in a professional kitchen environment or equivalent.
- Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
- Knowledge of kitchen management with the ability to delegate duties and monitor progress.
- Knowledge of culinary trends and kitchen processes.
- Ability to perform outlined tasks with minimum supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to accommodate a work schedule that may include weekends and evenings.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle.
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
Salary Range: $30.35/hr - $37.49/hr
